The Reason for My Hiatus

Sadness

I’ve had a bittersweet relationship with crafts over the past year or so.  The time period when I first started to get really good at crochet coincides with when my aunt was diagnosed with cancer for the first time.  I honed my yarn skills over lots and lots of hats for her.  After she passed away last summer, I lost my interest in crafts.  When I would pick up some yarn for a project, I thought of my aunt with every stitch, and I only made two small projects in almost a year.  My movements were mechanical, and I didn’t love it anymore.

Happiness

This past Christmas my brother and sister-in-law announced that my first nephew would be born in August, and I found the love again.  I had someone to make projects for; someone else to think about who wouldn’t make me feel sad.  I played with yarn for months, but didn’t want to write anything about it on my blog because I didn’t want to spoil any surprises.  Now that my nephew is here, and I’ve given all my gifts, I can talk about them a little!

Baby Projects

I made a baby blanket with some think yarn that was hard to work with.  I made another blanket, and had to adjust the pattern I used because after I worked a few rows I realized the instructions were wrong.  I also made a bunch of hats.  My sister-in-law wanted a hat to use for pictures, but she didn’t tell me specific colors, and I had no idea how big a baby’s head is, so I made several options.  Be on the lookout for posts about all these baby crafts.

Crafting for ME Again

I also learned how to needlepoint, and I bought a cross-stitch kit.  I’ll let you know how that goes.  It’s important to make pretty things for yourself and not give everything away as gifts!
